Notes on chips, resin, and urethane
Ridge on the quarter rule, resin time on the outer lite, and when urethane takes over.
A chip bigger than a quarter in the driver's view is a replacement
A US quarter is 0.955 inches. Wider than that where the driver looks, the windshield comes out.
What a resin fill actually takes on the outer lite
Drill, vacuum, inject, UV, polish. Twenty minutes off to the side, closer to half an hour in the driver's view.
Urethane safe drive-away is part of the replacement
The glass can look seated and still be unsafe to drive. The cartridge states the wait.
Bullseye, star, and combination break are not the same pit
Diameter is the whole break, legs included. The word chip does not pick the kit.
A crack that reaches the edge is a windshield, not a resin bridge
Once the leg hits the frit, the glass is moving. Resin will not stitch it to the pinchweld.
A forward camera changes the end of a replacement
Lane cameras read through the glass. A new windshield often needs a calibration the resin job never touches.
Cold glass and a wet pit will not take a clean resin cure
Water in the break goes milky. Freezing glass grows legs and slows the lamp.
A failed fill is drilled out or the glass is replaced
More resin on top of a cloudy kit-job does not fix the pit. Sometimes the windshield still has to come out.
