A chip bigger than a quarter in the driver's view is a replacement

A US quarter is 0.955 inches. Wider than that where the driver looks, the windshield comes out.

The driver's view is the glass the driver looks through, on the driver's side inside the wiper sweep. It is a patch of the windshield. The passenger corner and the frit band are a different conversation.

A US quarter is 0.955 inches across. Hold one up to the pit if the caller is standing at the car. If the chip, bullseye, or star in the driver's view is larger than that coin, resin is the wrong repair. The fill leaves a lens. The driver looks through a distortion, and a lot of state inspections will fail the glass for the same reason.

Measure across the whole break, legs included. A shiny center the size of a dime with two legs that stretch past an inch is an inch-plus break. The center is what people photograph. The legs are what decide the job.

The replacement is a different hour. The old urethane is cut back to a thin bed, the pinchweld is primed where the paint was nicked, and a new laminated windshield is pressed into a fresh bead before it skins over. That is the repair this chip needs.

Measure across the legs, and compare that width to a quarter, before anyone opens a resin bottle.
