Shop fact
A chip larger than a quarter in the driver's view is a replacement, not a resin fill.
A quarter is 0.955 inches across. If the break sits where the driver looks and it is wider than that coin, the glass comes out and a new windshield is set in urethane.
- Quarter
- 0.955 in. Larger than that in the driver's view means a new windshield.
- Resin
- About 22 to 38 minutes on the glass when the break is still a repair.
- Replacement
- About 75 minutes to cut out and set, then the urethane safe drive-away.
On the glass
Resin stays in the outer lite. Urethane holds a new windshield.
- R
Resin
Drill the pit, vacuum the moisture, inject, cure under a UV lamp, and polish flush. About 20 to 35 minutes when the break is still a repair.
- U
Urethane
Cut the old glass out, prime the pinchweld, lay the bead, set the windshield, and wait the safe drive-away. About 75 minutes on the car, then the cure.

The agent
Ridge writes the diameter before anyone promises a kit.
Ridge is the voice on this line. The portrait is the dispatcher. Ridge does not carry resin or cut out glass. A local company does the work and calls the driver back.
How wide is the break, in inches, and does it sit in the driver's view?
Open the mic to talk with Ridge.
- Diameter in inches
- Driver's view, or off to the side
- Whether a leg has reached the edge
- A camera at the mirror, if the glass is coming out
On the ticket
Resin minutes versus a full glass replacement
Chip diameter in inches, and whether it sits in the driver's view.
How it works
From the call to a booked job.
- 01
Name the chip
Bullseye, star, or a crack, plus the diameter in inches. A vague “chip” does not tell the van which kit to rack.
- 02
Mark the driver's view
Larger than a quarter there, and the ticket is a replacement. Resin stays for a smaller pit.
- 03
Book the resin
When the break is still a repair: drill the pit, vacuum the moisture, inject, cure under UV, and polish the surface flush.
- 04
Book the urethane
When the glass has to come out: cut the old windshield, prime the pinchweld, set the new one, and wait the safe drive-away before the car leaves.

From the glass desk
All articles- A chip bigger than a quarter in the driver's view is a replacement
A US quarter is 0.955 inches. Wider than that where the driver looks, the windshield comes out.
- What a resin fill actually takes on the outer lite
Drill, vacuum, inject, UV, polish. Twenty minutes off to the side, closer to half an hour in the driver's view.
- Urethane safe drive-away is part of the replacement
The glass can look seated and still be unsafe to drive. The cartridge states the wait.
- Bullseye, star, and combination break are not the same pit
Diameter is the whole break, legs included. The word chip does not pick the kit.
- A crack that reaches the edge is a windshield, not a resin bridge
Once the leg hits the frit, the glass is moving. Resin will not stitch it to the pinchweld.
- A forward camera changes the end of a replacement
Lane cameras read through the glass. A new windshield often needs a calibration the resin job never touches.
- Cold glass and a wet pit will not take a clean resin cure
Water in the break goes milky. Freezing glass grows legs and slows the lamp.
- A failed fill is drilled out or the glass is replaced
More resin on top of a cloudy kit-job does not fix the pit. Sometimes the windshield still has to come out.
Bring the diameter. Book the desk.
Ridge will ask whether the chip is in the driver's view before a company is named.
